Starting a Project
There’s more than one way to plan your Global Call to Action project. But here are some basic steps we think everyone should follow.
1. Learn more about the Global Call to Action.
You’ve already started. Take some time and explore this site – look at the 10 issues, learn about the Nobel laureates, browse through the project pages to get ideas from other groups. You might also want to check out the PeaceJam handbook.
2. Get a group together.
A project is a big undertaking – you’re going to need a lot of friends. You could form a club at school at a community center or at your place of worship. Or you could raise the idea to a group that already exists. Get the group to look at this site and learn about the GCA.
3. Get an adult sponsor.
An adult sponsor is not required by PeaceJam, but we recommend getting one. An adult (over 21) can make it easier to register your project here on the GCA site. Plus your school or youth center might require one. If your sponsor is not a member of a PeaceJam partner organization, then he or she will need to contact PeaceJam at kate@peacejam.org
4. Set regular meetings.
Your group meetings are where you will begin brainstorming your project. You will also want to discuss what you’ve learned about the issues and the Nobel laureates. make sure everyone in group knows where he or she can get information.
5. Brainstorm your Global Call to Action project.
Try to identify the root causes of the problem.
You can:
-
Observe the problem yourself.
-
Interview people about the problem
-
Gather facts about the problem from books or other sources.
-
Read the papers and watch the news for current information on this issue.
-
Find out what others have done about this problem already.
-
What are some creative solutions that have not been tried?
6. Make a detailed plan.
Once you have a decided on a project you need to create a detailed plan. Exactly what are you trying to accomplish? How will you know if you are successful. Be as specific as possible. Set intermediate goals and deadlines as well as a final goal. What resources will you need and how will you get them? What groups or organizations will you get to help you? Be ambitious but also set a goal you feel you can reach.
You can use this worksheet to help create your plan.
7. Register your project with PeaceJam.
You must submit your plan and have it approved by PeaceJam to become a part of the Global Call to Action. When you are ready, fill in the Project Registration Form. You can use the worksheet to prepare your answers first.
Note: only project leaders can register a project. Project leaders must be at least 13 years old.
Once your project is approved, it will get its own project area on the GCA website. PeaceJam will send your project leader information to allow your group to login on the Global Call to Action website. You will then be able to use all the great networking features of this site to to connect with other GCA members around the world.
